Information for Leaders
Lighthouse
Monday 26th - Friday 30th July 2010
Sir William Ramsay School, Rose Avenue, Hazlemere & The Royal Grammar School, Amersham Road, High Wycombe
Lighthouses are holiday clubs for children run by Christians from local churches. We aim to introduce the children to God, explore the Bible with them and help them look to Jesus as their special friend – all in a fun-filled week with sport, craft, performing arts and music.
Lighthouse began in Great Missenden and Prestwood in 1987. Lighthouse Hazlemere began in 2000, Fresh Cafe in 2002, and Lighthouse High Wycombe in 2006. It takes over 700 leaders to put on Lighthouse Hazlemere, Lighthouse High Wycombe and Fresh Café – and there is almost certainly something you can do to help. In 2009 we registered 1500 children, and still had to turn some away. We are only limited by the numbers of helpers we can attract so now is the time to sign up for 2010 and please tell your friends about it too.
The minimum age for leaders at Lighthouse is 12 (as at 31st August 2010) and at Fresh Café helpers must be 18 or over (as at 31st August 2010). There is a list of the main roles on the leader application form, but here is a quick summary:
In the frontline are the Lighthouse Keepers who lead a group of 10-15 children through the week, with one or more Lamplighters (who are usually teenage helpers). It’s important that Lighthouse Keepers are Christians themselves, as they lead a daily Lighthouse session to help the children dig deeper into the Bible theme for the day.
You could be part of an activity team, which plans and delivers activity sessions such as games, craft or performing arts. Or – if large groups of children aren’t your thing – you could join a support team (e.g. admin, First Aid, registration/sales, quiet tent, on-site prayer support, parent welcome tent). We also need people for site and security, and the techies for sound and light. There are opportunities to help at the parent and toddler sessions which are held in the mornings at St Francis Church Hall (LHHW) and Holy Trinity Church (LHH).
For more information about roles, please check out the roles pages.
There will be informal training sessions in the weeks leading up to Lighthouse, so you and your team are ready to hit the ground running!
Even if you’re not a churchgoer, or personally committed Christian yourself, you’re welcome to help, so long as you’re happy that it’s run on a Christian basis. We’d love you to come for the whole week, but even if you can only do one morning, you will have something worthwhile to do! In fact, you may look back on Lighthouse as the highlight of your summer!
FRESH CAFÉ
Monday 26th, Wednesday 28th & Thursday 29th July 2010
Sir William Ramsay School, Rose Avenue, Hazlemere
Fresh Café is an opportunity for the Lamplighter and Lighthouse keepers to relax and wind down after a hard days work at Lighthouse. Fresh Café is also open to young people not involved with Lighthouse, providing a great opportunity to share about God with young people who may not otherwise hear it.
It is for 11-17 year olds and happens on the Lighthouse Hazlemere site on the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings of Lighthouse week from 7:30-9:30pm. In previous years we have had 350+ young people attending each evening. There are many activities going on through the evenings including; football, tag rugby, volleyball, inflatables, games consoles, nail painting and, of course, the café.
As you can imagine, all these activities need adult leaders and we need your help. If you are aged 18 or over then please get on board and make Fresh Café a meaningful time for the young people who attend. We will give full instructions for all roles on the night and provide support during the time that you are with us, right from our briefing time at 7pm to debriefing before 10pm.
Please fill in the form if you are interested and make sure you come along to the leaders Dessert and Details Evening on Friday 16th July 8-10pm at Union Baptist Church, Easton Street High Wycombe, HP11 1NJ (Hall at rear).
Need an application form?
You can download an application form here.
Children’s application forms will be available online for Leaders on receipt of your Application Acknowledgement Letter and from May in schools and churches. Please note that the only way to guarantee a place for your child (younger brother/sister or grandchild) is to help for a minimum of three sessions (a.m. or p.m.) at Lighthouse or Fresh Café.
The provisional dates for Lighthouse 2011 are Monday 25th to Friday 29th July. |
